In the spring, around Mother’s Day, it is a real delight to see many cute young animals with their mothers. Most all wildlife moms take very good care and give great protection to their offspring.
One of the best examples is watching a Black Bear with her cubs. The cubs (usually 2-3) are born in a den during their winter hibernation and nurse while the Mother sleeps. In the spring, when the cubs weigh about five pounds, they leave the Den with their Mother. In the coming summer and fall months, they play, tumble, climb trees, and graze with their Mom, who at the same time is teaching her young how to be bears. When winter comes again, they hibernate together. After about two years the cubs are sent off to begin their new lives alone, without Mom. She has completed her work as Mom’s everywhere do. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
MOTHER’S DAY AND BLACK BEAR
HUMANS THINK WE BEARS ARE A HOOT,
LIKE TEDDY BEARS CUDDLEY AND CUTE.
BUT THOUGH I SEEM LAID BACK AND SLOW,
THERE’S SOMETHING ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW.
DON’T COME CLOSE WHEN MY CUBS ARE NEAR,
OR YOU’LL KNOW THE MEANING OF FEAR!
